**Pre-test on inconspicuous are before use. Can be used over surfaces moderately covered with dust, road grime or salt.

1. Apply product to cool, dry surface in shaded area…out of the wind , if possible.

2. Use two soft, clean terry cloth towels—one for applying the product and one for buffing. For best results use the DWG Buffing Towel for buffing.

3. Invert AIRosol pump sprayer and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.

4. Pressurize bottle by pumping cap “up and down” until a strong resistance is felt (approx., 10-15 times).

5. Spray a light coat of DRI WASH’N GUARD® ULTRA-ION™ on a small section of vehicle (2-3 sq. ft.) spray with broad, sweeping motions where possible.

6. Using the terry cloth towel, with moderately firm pressure, rub polish thoroughly over the sprayed area until the filmy haze that developed almost totally disappears.

7. Lightly buff remaining haze to a high gloss with the buffing towel.

DWG ULTRA·ION™ Waterless Car Wash Review

I recently completed a year of washing my 2011 Toyota Tacoma with DWG ULTRA-ION™. I have been extremely impressed. In total I did a complete clean with the product about every 2 months. In-between, I used a wet rag in one hand and a buffing towel in the other and used the product only for touch-up. The shine ULTRA-ION™ gives to my truck never fails to draw attention; what’s more, the more I use the product the more it shines. I only used water to wash the truck once all year. Even after washing when there was thick road grime all over the paint there is not so much as a feather scratch left behind after cleaning with ULTRA-ION™. ULTRA-ION works great on glass as well. Cleaning with ULTRA-ION™ also keeps my truck clean for longer than a tradition wash & wax would. The product actually repels dirt and grime. It even keeps nasty tar and bug guts from sticking.

I do have a few gripes. First, my truck has several chrome decals that stick out from the paint. It is very difficult to use ULTRA-ION™ on these areas. I found that a shoe polishing brush is the best tool to use on such areas. Second, not washing with water is fine for the painted portions, windows, and rims on my truck. It is not such a great solution for the undercarriage, wheel wells, engine, and tires. In these areas the grime just keeps building up. In some areas where road grime contains corrosive additives like salt this could be a disaster. This next year I plan to wash with water and suds prior to using ULTRA-ION™ every third wash to solve this issue.

All said, I have determined that DWG ULTRA-ION™ is an outstanding product. I intend to keep using it for years to come, and I recommend it every time the subject of auto detailing comes up.

One final note, I washed my truck this last weekend in front of a rented cabin on the beach in Hawaii. That was very cool! The temperature was perfect. I watched the sunset as I washed. You just could not do that with a traditional wash and wax.

DWG CLASSIC Waterless Car Wash Review

Classic was the original Waterless Car Wash produced by DWG. It is still the preferred cleaning product for vehicles manufactured prior to 2000. I don’t own a car that fits in this category, but when I saw the product demonstrated at a classic car show the beauty on which it was used shown brighter than all the competition.

There is no inflated hype in the summery statements for Oxygone™. It works just like it says it does. My Toyota Tacoma came from the dealer with watermarks on the windshield that I just couldn’t seem to get off. Oxygone™ did the trick. The headlights on my Toyota Highlander where weathered so badly that I couldn’t see through them. A mixture of Oxygone™ and DWG Metal Polish took care of this as well. Twice I have had friends ask me for demos to see if DWG could remove terrible watermarks from their cars. Again, Oxygone™ worked like a charm. A product is easy to recommend when it just works.

A couple important notes: First, for vehicles that have wide spread weathering I recommend using a buffer. You could do it by hand but it would be a lot of work. Second, use of Ultra-Ion™ or Classic Waterless Car Wash will help prevent future weathering after the Oxygone™ has done its job.

Before you read this article I want to point out that contrary to popular belief the “Big-3” auto manufacturers do believe in oil additives. Each one of them has an oil additive manufactured for them and private labeled with their name on it. One uses a graphite based additive another uses a sulfur based product. You’ll find it on the shelves in their parts departments. I understand why you might be surprised by that bit of news, we’ve never heard them promoting it have we? Heaven forbid that we should extend the life of the equipment they manufacture and sell. Have you ever looked at the corporate year end reports of these companies? If you do you will notice that their income source in replacement parts is nearly double that of their new car sales income? Interesting? Why do you think that car parts don’t seem to last as long? Some suggest that it’s by design.

Because oil technology has made great strides in recent years, the thought that motor oils of today are capable of protecting engine parts and extending engine life better than ever before is understandable. Keep in mind though that the design of today’s motor oils is still dictated by the manufacturers of today’s engines. The oil designer follows a strict set of guidelines set forth by the engine manufacturer just as it has been done for decades. 

They follow those guidelines so that they can place a label on the can that says; “meets manufacturer’s minimum requirements.” It was recently pointed out to me that the engine manufacturer’s minimum requirements haven’t changed since 1957. I found that odd knowing that the minimum demands we place on our engines today is significantly greater then the minimum demands of the fifties.

Did you see that it’s based on the “minimum requirements?” Remember that the next time you buy a quart of store brand oil…it was also made by the company with the lowest bid.

It's no secret that an engine contains hundreds of moving parts that must be kept separate from each other by a film of oil. Whenever two parts slide or rotate, the resulting metal to metal contact can produce severe and unnecessary wear. An important function of motor oil is to establish a film of oil thick enough and strong enough to prevent metal-to-metal contact. The more oil can accomplish this the longer a piece of equipment can last.

A second important function of motor oil is to reduce friction. Friction results from the resistance of engine parts to movement against each other. To experience that right now place the palms of your hands together and rub them against each other quickly for 10 seconds. You will feel an immediate increase in palm temperature. Can you imagine how quickly the moving parts in your engine would heat up and fuse together if you didn’t have good lubrication?

Motor oils are required to do more than provide a lubricating film and reduce friction. A third important function is to act as a coolant and help remove the heat generated by the engine. The engines heat again comes from friction produced by closely fitted engine parts such as connecting rods and main bearings, camshafts, and piston rings. Though most people think that the radiator fluid is responsible for cooling the engine it actually only handles about 60% of that task. The engines oil handles the other 40%. This presents a good case for always keeping your oil at the correct level as specified by the manufacturer.

The ease of starting an engine depends not only on the condition of the battery and ignition, proper fuel volatility, and fuel to air ratio but also on the flow properties of the motor oil. If the oil is too viscous or heavy or thick at starting, it will impose enough drag on the moving parts that the engine cannot be cranked fast enough to start promptly and keep running. All of our friends in the northern parts, where temperatures drop each year, have most likely experienced this from time to time. That’s why they make sure they change their engine oil to a lower viscosity before the temperatures drop. Viscosity is a measure of the oil’s resistance to flow. A lower viscosity such as a single-grade 5W can flow easier in cold temperatures than a single-grade 40W. But then once the engine finally warms up to operating temperatures the 5W is not enough protection and now your engine needs 40W. Therefore engineers designed a multi-grade blend that could function in conditions as extreme as that. You’ve seen them as 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, and 10W-40 and so on. Here in the southern part of the US  where temperatures can be extreme on the other end of the scale you’ll find many owners using 20W-50. Be sure and always consult your owners’ manual for the recommended blend.  But then again perhaps you should make a more intelligent decision and determine what's best for your engine.

With all of the internal parts of an engine being constructed basically of metal components, motor oils are blended with other additives that help to neutralize the foreign by-products that can occur in the crankcase. Fuel that blows by the rings, moisture that never evaporates because the engine wasn't operated long enough at normal operating temperatures, and there are many more. Those by-products can be corrosive to the internal metal parts so motor oil has a blend of additives that can help resist rust and corrosion. It just seems that no one can tell you how long it can actually resist the elements.

Living in Southern CA. with all the stop and go traffic it's real important that you use an oil treatment. I have been using DWG’s PolyGuard-1™ Oil Treatment for almost 10 years in all of our cars. DWG Polyguard-1™ Oil Treatment Review

I have used DWG Polyguard-1™ Oil Treatment on my last two oil changes on both my 2011 Toyota Tacoma and 2005 Highlander. I have planned a series of tests to verify DWG’s claims of improved fuel economy and performance. Unfortunately, Hawaii is not an optimum location for vehicle testing. These experiments are on hold for the time being. I have noticed when I’ve changed out oil that had the product in it that the color of the oil was still clear and relatively clean looking compared to the black colored dirty oil I usually find after 5,000 miles. My hypothesis is that the oil treatment is reducing friction and wear resulting in less discoloration of the oil. I will publish an update here once I have completed my tests to verify improvements in performance and fuel economy.

DWG All-Weather Tire & Trim Treatment Review

This tire and trim treatment, while very good, is not my favorite product in the DWG line. It does well on my soft rubber mud flaps. It also does a great job on the soft plastic trim around my windows. It comes off the paint when I overspray and leaves the Ultra-Ion shine unblemished. It takes some elbow grease but it will remove the Hawaii red dirt stains from my tires and leave them looking near new.

Where the product seems to fall short is textured plastic. I am using WeatherTech Digital Fit Floor Mats inside my truck. They are textured for traction. When I use the tire and trim treatment on these, it looks like it has done the job at first, but later once its dried, dirt remains in the pits of the texture. My Toyota Tacoma also has a textured hard plastic bed and trim on the bumper. I have had the same issue with these areas.

My conclusion is that DWG All Weather Tire & Trim Treatment is great for smooth soft plastic areas. OK for cleaning tires. Poor for cleaning textured trim. Good, but not perfect.

DWG Premium Metal Polish Review

I have had very little cause to use this metal polish. There is no metal that needs polishing on my vehicles. It does work great when putting a finishing shine on my stainless steal appliances. It also worked very well mixed with Oxygone™ to repair the weathered, pitted headlights on my Toyota Highlander. I look forward to using this product more once I install a performance exhaust on my Toyota Tacoma.

DWG Leather & Vinyle Treatment Review

I have used this leather and vinyl treatment repeatedly in my 2005 Toyota Highlander. It has an off-white leather interior and we have 4 children. This affords plenty of grime and wear to test the product. It has not met any grime yet that it could not clean. When used on the dash and instrument panel, this product actually repels dust, keeping the interior cleaner for longer.

This upholstery, fabric, & carpet treatment is nearly my favorite DWG product. It just works, and with very little effort. Here are a few examples:

- The kids got sticky Halloween candy all over on the floor in my bedroom. After a few days of Hawaii humidity, it seemed like a hopeless mess. I made plans to go out and rent a steam cleaner the next day, but on a whim decided to try this product first. After about 15 minutes of work, every sign of this widespread, sticky mess was gone. This product made the ground-in, soggy candy disintegrate into small chunks that were easily picked up by a microfiber towel.

- I spilled about a cup of soy sauce on the front seat of my 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The next day the whole truck reeked and there was a big, brown stain on the seat. All I had to do was spray down the area with this product and wipe up with a microfiber towel and all sign and smell of the mess was gone.

- Every time I clean the interior of my truck, the seats and floor have a tint of red from our famous Hawaii red dirt. This stuff stains so bad that there is a whole tourist market based on t-shirts dyed with it. I just spray a fine mist of this product over these large areas and wipe up. The stains disappear.
