.: Walther P99 Review |
The Walther P99 is my favorite full sized duty pistol. For the last year I have carried a Walther P99QA as a concealed-carry weapon. I shopped for months before I decided on this model. I was initially drawn to it by its unique sculpted appearance and sold on it by the way it felt in my hand. The initial WOW that I experienced in the showroom has not faded with time. I continue to be impressed with this weapon every time I handle it. It is light, exceptionally well-designed and manufactured, and absolutely dependable. The Walther P99 fires the same way every single time, clean or dirty, skillfully fired or not. It is easy to field strip and easy to clean, in my mind the perfect sidearm. This Walther P99 review consists of this write-up, an extensive collection of graphics and videos that I produced as a tool to assist Walther P99 owners with fieldstripping and maintaining their weapons, and the results of a series of tests I performed firing just less than 5000 rounds to compare the performance fo the Walther P99 with that of the Beretta 92F.

“Walther” is a German masculine name meaning “powerful warrior." Walther Arms was founded in 1886. The firm is best known for making breakthroughs in the development of pistol designs. The PPK and P99 are among the best known models of Walther pistols, both having been featured as the firearm of choice for the fictional character James Bond.
Development of the Walther P99 began in 1994 and culminated in its presentation in 1997. It is used by the German Police, the Polish Police, and the Finnish Army’s Special Forces.
Notable features of the Walther P99 QA's design include an internal striker rather than a hammer, four internal safeties, decocking button, sights adjustable for windage and elevation, accessory rail, interchangeable backstraps of varying sizes for different users, and an ambidextrous magazine release lever integrated into the trigger guard.
There are several models of the Walther P99 in production. The QA designator in the P99QA model, which is the focus of this article, stands for “Quick Action.” It has a shorter, lighter trigger pull, faster reset, and more constant feed than other Walther P99 models.
One other notable model is the Walther P99AS. The AS designator stands for “Anti Stress.” It replicates the double/single action trigger that is a feature of the Beretta 92F, which is designed to lessen the likelihood of stress-induced negligent discharges. It was originally released chambered for 9mm x 19 Parabellum, but since 1998, .40 S&W chambered models have also been available.
Ongoing complaints regarding the function of the Walther P99 pertain to its trigger pull. The trigger pull is smooth and operates exactly as it was intended to, but has a distinctly different feel than other pistols on the market.

This has been a long time coming and now Washington sees the change taking place as soon as 2014. Unfortunately my Walther P99 is not in the running for the M9's replacement. Smith & Wesson and Beretta seam well placed to get the contract. I am a pretty excited about the Beretta offering myself. A swap from the Beretta 92F to the Beretta PX4 Storm in a.45 would be quite an upgrade.
